Ráiteas / Statement: 04/07/2017
“Internment by Bail”, how ridiculous it sounds and yet this is the reality facing three of the best activists in the country.
Dónal Ó Ceallaigh, Johnathan Hawthorn and Jimmy Geraghty, all three members of Sinn Féin Poblachtach Átha Cliath are facing membership charges of Óglaigh na h-Éireann. Despite no evidence only the word of a Garda Chief Superintendent. The reality is these men have been on the front lines in opposing the unwanted enforcement of Water Meters across Dublin, and an excuse was needed to get them off the streets.
While Jobstown made national headlines simply because of household names of certain politicians involved, what is happening to these three men will not make headlines and yet the methods being used are a threat to every political activist in the country.
Having been arrested on the 14th of September 2016, they have since been hamstrung by draconian legislation while out on bail, it has now come to light that the trial date has been set for July 2nd next year 2018. This is a ploy from the political police of a Government in a state of fear from some of our countries best front line activists, to keep them off the streets and out of Political engagements.
The long drawn out process of this trial is a disgrace; we in Sinn Féin Poblachtach commend the three men and stand by them resolutely every step of the way.”
