Preas Ráitheas / Press Release – 15/11/2016
“News that The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has declined an offer to purchase on behalf of the State the surrender note written by Pádraig MacPiarais is not at all surprising.
The department headed by Heather Humphreys is engrossed in political hypocrisy, paying as James Connolly once termed, “hypocritical homage at the shrine of the freedom whose cause they have betrayed”. The department was offered for the second time to purchase this document, both of national and historical significance but declining stating the fact they already possess handwritten letters from MacPiarais.
This is from the same department which in the centenary year of the 1916 Rising, unveiled a monument in Glasnevin Cemetery with the names in honor of British imperialists killed fighting against Irish revolutionaries in 1916. And which attempted to demolish Moore Street, a national monument central in the uprising of ’16, only for it to be occupied and saved by Irish citizens.
We once more need Irish citizens to voice their anger and opposition to save our heritage and history.”
