Activists of Sinn Féin Poblachtach & Na Fianna Éireann at the occupation of Moore St.

Preas Ráitheas / Press Release

In a statement issued on March 19, national PRO Shinn Féin Poblachtach Seán Ó Dubhláin issued the following statement;

“Republican Sinn Féin welcome the decision that Moore Street, as a ‘1916 battlefield’ is to be declared a national monument.

However, we issue caution, whilst the High Court Judge made orders against the Free State Minister for Arts, Heritage  and Gaeltacht Affairs to cease the demolition and unauthorized works on the street from buildings thirteen to nineteen it is open to challenge from the Minister.   We cannot put this past those who have displayed an almost complete disdain towards our cultural heritage in the past.  Let us not forget the ongoing treachery of the Free State and what their vision for Moore Street was, this is but one victory in the context of a much wider cultural war and if this year was not the centenary of 1916 Rising it begs the question, would this judgement have been met?

For now we can declare victory, Republican Sinn Féin commend our activists and all those who for years campaigned to save Moore Street from demolition, when the hour called it was the ordinary people of Ireland who stepped forward and saved Moore Street, the men and women of ’16 would be proud of that defense.”
