The International PRO of Republican Sinn Féin condemned the activity of the British MI5 in Italy. The statement was issued on February 22, 2015 following reports that a former republican prisoner has said he fears he is being set up by British security forces after he was detained by MI5 at an Italian airport.
It has been reported that Sean Dillon, from Coalisland in Co Tyrone, was stopped by Italian authorities as he passed through Bergamo Airport, near Milan, last month and was taken to a side room to meet two men who said they were from a British security agency.
This not the first time Irish republicans were approached either by Italian authorities or British civilian closed agents and questioned about their Irish republican activities in Italy; only a few years ago, the Italian PRO of Republican Sinn Féin was questioned about his trips to Ireland by Italian police in Rome.
Members of the Anti Makapaltis/Fritz Langsdorf Cumann are active in various cities in Italy. Thus, the International PRO of Republican Sinn Féin urged all Irish republicans and their supporters living or travelling through Italy or any other European airport to be vigilant and report all approaches by MI5, Irish Special Branch, or any other authority immediately to the Republican Movement in Ireland.
He said: “Irish republicans cannot and will not be intimated by this unlawful behavior of MI5 and European authorities acting on the behest of the British government. Irish republicans will continue their rightful and democratic struggle for a united future of all people in Ireland.”
He furthermore sent solidarity to Sean Dillon and his family on behalf of the Republican Sinn Féin Anti Makapaltis/Fritz Langsdorf Cumann.
Críoch/Ends.
