Preas Ráitheas / Press Release
“Today the Children’s Court came out with a disgraceful but expected verdict in the case of 17 year old Jay Lester for the false imprisonment of Joan Bruton. This case centered around a protest in Jobstown where Joan and her entourage were blocked in for a period of time by people protesting the water charges being brought in by the then Leinster House coalition of Fine Gael and the Labour Party.
At the time of the incident Jay was only 15 years old and thus was charged through the Children’s Court. The message the state is attempting to send out with this and other court cases is that they will do their utmost to make all forms of protest illegal.
A march has been organized for tomorrow 22nd Oct at 13.00 hrs outside the Central Bank, we urge all people to attend in defence of the right to protest but also in solidarity with Jay.”
