Preas Ráitheas / Press Release – 27ú Mí Bealtaine/May 2016

Statement by the President of Republican Sinn Féin Des Dalton

The commemoration held in Grangegorman yesterday by the 26-County State to commemorate the British soldiers killed while engaged in supressing the 1916 Rising was a reprehensible and shameful act. No self-respecting state or nation commemorates those who have borne arms against it. Do the French commemorate the German forces of occupation or those who collaborated with them in the Vichy French forces? Do the Algerians commemorate the French colonial forces? Or the United States commemorate the British forces who died during their War of Independence? The presence of armed British Soldiers at the ceremony make it an even more egregious act of shoneenism. The 26-County administration is subverting the centenary of the 1916 Rising in order to normalise the continued British partition and occupation of the north eastern corner of Ireland.

The disgraceful action of the Canadian Ambassador Kevin Vickers, in interfering with what was clearly a peaceful protest by an Irish citizen again is a shameful act, compounded by the failure of the Dublin Administration to take any action of censure against him. However, what else can one expect from a state which is willing to hold such a ceremony in the first place?
