Sinn Féin Poblachtach members and supporters have been informed this evening Saturday, May 21, 2016 of the sad passing of a lifelong member of the Republican Movement, Matt Conway of County Kildare.

Born on April 4, 1935 Matt joined the Republican Movement in 1950 as a member of Na Fianna Éireann and went to join other branches of the Movement under the guidance of Frank Driver of Ballymore Eustace. He was very active during the Resistance Campaign from 1952 until 1962 and served with Seán Sabhat of Limerick, Fergal O’Hanlon, Monaghan, Liam Fagan of Louth, Daithí Ó Conaill and Gearóid Mac Cártaigh of Cork.

In 1957 he went to England and was involved there in the Republican Movement.

Throughout both significant splits in 1969/70 and again in 1986 Matt Conway played an important role in keeping the revolutionary tradition alive, rejecting partition and any collaborating with British rule. Since 1986 Matt has been a member of the Ard Chomhairle of Sinn Féin Poblachtach. He was also central in the POW organisation CABHAIR looking after the Prisoners in Portlaoise Gaol.

In 2013 Matt along with his wife Cecilia were awarded the annual CABHAIR Testimonial award for Leinster having been nominated by comrades in the Province for a lifetime of dedication and service to the thirty-two county Irish Republic Proclaimed in 1916.

Ar dheis Dé do raibh a anam, Matt!
