Statement by the President of Republican Sinn Féin, Des Dalton
Republican Sinn Féin salutes the activists who have occupied the historic 14-17 Moore St site since Thursday last (January 7). They are defending our revolutionary history from the clutches of the same political and economic forces that have wreaked social and economic harm on the Irish people over the past eight years and more. Their actions embrace fully the spirit of 1916, Irish men and women, motivated by the highest ideals of patriotism, taking decisive action to protect our heritage from those who would sell it to the highest bidder.
In this, the centenary year of the 1916 Rising, the very fact that Irish people are forced to take such action is an indictment of the Leinster House political class and their business cronies. Would the French allow developers to build a supermarket in the Place de la Bastille or the United States of America allow Independence Hall in Philadelphia to be erased?
We urge Irish people at home and abroad to rally in support of the activists in Moore St. Do not let them take our history or rob it of its meaning. It belongs to all of the Irish people. Victory to Occupy Moore St!
