Rest in Peace, Brian Smullen

The death has taken place of County Organiser Brian Smullen in Tralee. Brian a native of Rhod Co. Offaly was born in 1948. In his youth he joined the local Slua of na Fianna Éireann as well as his local Rhod GAA club playing both football and hurling.

He moved to Belfast in the late 1960s in search of employment and it was there that he joined Sinn Féin, from there he immigrated to England were he met and married his wife Teresa. In 1973 the couple moved back to Teresa’s home town of Tralee.

During the 1981 Hungerstrikes in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh, Brian worked tirelessly both on the local H-block committee and touring around the County and Country on behalf of the Volunteers on hungerstrike and their families.

In the past Brian served as a member of the Ard Comhairle and Comhairle Na Mumhan, over the years he was guest speaker at many commemorations and Republican events throughout Ireland and was in regular attendance at the annual WolfeTone Commemoration in Bordentown.

At the time of his death his was Kerry County Organiser and Chairman of The Rice/Sheehy/Dowling Cumann Tralee.

Brian’s death comes as a great loss to Republicans in Kerry both on a personal basis as a friend and as a dedicated and determined worker in pursuit of the ideals and principals of the All Ireland Republic.

On behalf of Sinn Féin Poblachtach Ciarraí, we extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to his wife Teresa, daughters Geraldine, Mary, Elisabeth, Teresa Ann, Caroline, Bernadette, Siobhan, Roisín Sons in law and grand children, his comrades in the Republican Movement and his many friends.
