Britain’s last chance saloon or will they just keep kicking the can down the road

In a statement on September 20, 2025 a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach said: “The so-called new legacy deal is done, but will it find the legs to recover from the already jaded influence of Britain.

“We have been told that there has been a coming together of British-Irish political minds, without consensus from those seeking justice for their loved ones. The legislative forerunner (Legacy and Reconciliation, Act 2023) was also enacted without consultation under the British Conservative government and was demonstrably used as a veil of secrecy or as a continued cover up, according to victims, survivors, and families. An example of this is the high profile sectarian murder of Seán Brown. Today’s British Labour government has followed the same path by allowing their officials to rely on the advice and control of Britain’s intelligence services. These dark forces are making every effort to protect state agents suspected of involvement in Seán Brown’s murder and many others.

“The British Tory-lite Labour Party had publicly agreed to reform the British Legacy Act 2023 and do away with the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR), which lacked public support from those that really matter: victims, survivors, and families who continue to seek justice in the Occupied Six Counties. British courts, at every level, have declared the Legacy Act 2023 unlawful.

“Sinn Féin Poblachtach condemns these continued actions of the British regime. People in the Occupied Six Counties have experienced this abuse of power for generations. It is these tactics that were ruthlessly employed in an attempt to crush the indomitable spirit of the Irish nation.

“This so-called new legacy agreement will take its place into British law by 2026 and politicos have been saying there are signs that the 26-County administration in Dublin will build closer relationships with Britain akin to what was cultivated in the 1990s.

“We also have the absurd situation where freshly obtained figures reveal that up to 36 former RUC staff and British soldiers are currently employed by the ICRIR and actively working on cases. In June 2025 the Irish News reported the figure was 26 – an increase of ten, or 38.4 percent, since then.”
