In a statement on July 24, 2025, a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach said: “Sinn Féin Poblachtach condemns the imperialist alliance of the US and Britain for the coordinated efforts to transfer nuclear bombs to British soil with three times the power of Hiroshima.

“On July 23 it was reported that the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) has called for British government ‘transparency’ amid reports the United States Air Force had moved nuclear weapons to a Suffolk airbase in the previous week. Flight data showed that on July 17, 2025, a US Air Force C-17A Globemaster III, call sign Reach 4574, flew from Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico to RAF Lakenheath in Britain, travelling more than 4,400 miles (8,200km) and likely transporting B61-12 nuclear bombs. The flight was supported by mid-air refuelling over the Atlantic, which suggests it took a transatlantic route.

“Let’s us never forget, that on August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. The aerial bombings slaughtered between 150,000 and 246,000 people, most of whom were civilians.

“Sinn Féin Poblachtach has frequently pointed out that 26-County airspace is frequently used by foreign military aircraft. Our research has demonstrated that around 7,000 foreign military flights annually, and the Dublin government does not require these aircraft to declare whether they carry nuclear or any type of war materials.

“On this occasion it’s possible the C-17 could have passed over or near Irish airspace, especially since air refuelling occurred over the Atlantic.

“Sinn Féin Poblachtach advocates for a nuclear-free Ireland and under a 32-county federal socialist republic. We will lobby for a total ban on nuclear-armed aircraft from Irish airspace.”
