Moygashel memorial parade glorifies a sectarian serial killer

In a statement on April 14, 2025, a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach said: “On April 12 hundreds of loyalists including 30 bands marched through Moygashel to commemorate UVF Miami Showband bomber Wesley Somerville.

“It was clear to see the two-tier RUC/PSNI operation in the Co Tyrone village unlike the violence meted out towards Republicans in the North Lurgan area by British Crown forces, back in Easter 2018.

“During the Moygashel parade, the glorification of loyalist terrorism was on display for the whole world to witness. The RUC/PSNI refused to arrest those supporting Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF, proscribed under a British law (Terrorism Act 2000) which prohibits membership, support, and promotion of the aforesaid group.

“When presented with the subject of loyalist terrorism and British state-sponsored murder Sinn Féin Poblachtach will not be seen deficient and when these pro-British fascists start celebrating aloud with their triumphalism and pride it is everybody’s responsibility to become vocal and condemn their actions.

“Over the weekend, the annual UVF hatefest in Moygashel went forward unimpeded. They had marching bands alluring their supporters with anti-Catholic/nationalist offensive music as well as loyalist flags, sectarian insignia and wreaths depicting support for the UVF. It has been well documented that the loyalist death squad (the UVF) is responsible for carrying out more than 500 murders. We also understand that some of these fatalities were carried out with consent from the British regime in Whitehall, London.

“It should never be forgotten that the UVF has committed some of the worst sectarian atrocities throughout the Occupied Six Counties.

“This particular band parade pays homage to a sectarian serial killer and the senior role he played inside the so called Glenanne murder gang. These murders stalked the mid-Ulster area, whilst at times, they leveraged their connection to the UDR, a British army regiment, the RUC police force and utilised both to their advantage. According to reports, this group is linked to at least 100 deaths.
