The British Labour and the Tories – just more of the same

In a statement on September 14, 2024, a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach, said: “Changes in government by the British establishment have never had a positive effect in Ireland. Labour or Tory: their aim was always to ensure that British rule in Ireland was cemented. The latest change from Tory to Labour emphasises this.

On September 13 the British government announced that it is pausing funding of “city deals”, ie, regeneration funding packages worth more than £1.5bn with about £600m coming from Westminster government, in the Occupied Six Counties.

“According to Tom Collins writing in the Irish News back in August 2024, British Labour are shaping up to be ‘full-pelt Tory’. He goes on to say that ‘Kier Starmer, British prime minister, is not even promising the status quo’.

“The British governments propaganda machine would like ordinary people in the Occupied Six Counties to believe that they are on the cusp of dramatic socio-economic transformations. When in fact it is austerity mark two.

“Let us never ignore the current attitude of the British establishment, including the “Six-County administration of Stormont which is ‘frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn’. Taking care of the imperialist bankers is their primary concern.

“Keir Starmer swept into Downing Street promising change, optimism and, above all, economic growth. Irish Republicans are fully aware that a British government that “turns the page” won’t be sufficient to address the systemic imperialism that has been linked to Tory austerity for more than 14 years.

“Sinn Féin Poblachtach states that the people of the Occupied Six Counties have been punished, yet again. This time it’s about £1.5 billion for these so-called city deals for supporting economic growth — another bygone promise from the Tories. What now for the pro-British Stormont and its political parties? Is it kowtow back at the Empire’s table, begging for more crumbs.
