In a statement on August 13 2024, a spokesperson for Comhairle Uladh (Ulster Executive), Sinn Féin Poblachtach, said “It is expected that up to 249,000 pensioners in the occupied six counties will miss out on a payment this winter.
“The British Labour government in London will cut the payment, worth up to £300, for all but the poorest pensioners, beginning this winter.
“Sinn Féin Poblachtach, has condemned those overseeing these stringent cuts in the occupied six counties—the increased in deaths amongst our elderly will be due to fuel poverty.
“According to the Stormont six county administration there is no additional finance. Let’s not forget this committee of political elites have the power—not to introduce this punitive and punishing measure.
“You can rest assure, that it will not be a grand parent or indeed their parent which may lose a life to fuel poverty. This issue of ‘haves and have-nots’ is about class distinction.
“Sinn Féin Poblachtach, has condemned the method of means-testing used to balance the books. Means-testing is supposed to target help at those who need it most. But those who need it most are those who don’t claim it.
